Glucosamine for Pets

If you are a pet owner, then you will inevitably see the complications that may arise as your pet ages. Whether, your pet is a cat or a dog, it is bound to experience some sort of joint issue or arthritis problem. A very common form of arthritis in pets is osteoarthritis or OA. OA can be caused by a number of things; such as an old injury or repeated trauma to a joint. Obesity is a large problem. A pet that is just 5 lbs. overweight can be at an increased risk of OA. Age is one of the most common factors and the activity level of your pet (if they were once a working dog or were very athletic, this tends to put more stress on their joints). These factors, as well as heredity may increase their risk of degenerative joint disease.

It can be very heart breaking to see your pet struggle with everyday tasks that once seemed so simple. Things like getting up to go outside on their own and jumping on the bed or sofa can become extremely, and increasingly, difficult.  So what is OA? “Osteoarthritis is a chronic, degenerative, joint disease that is caused by the progressive inflammation and deterioration of the cartilage, bone, and soft tissue of one or more joints.” The cartilage that cushions the bones starts to deteriorate; this causes friction between the bones, which leads to pain and inflammation in the affected joint(s). Inflammation of the cartilage can stimulate spurs to form around the joints. This process can lead to a large decrease in mobility. The most commonly affected joints are the hips, elbows, knees, and wrists.

Many people do not feel very comfortable putting their pets on NSAID’s (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) which can have potentially harmful side effects. Finding a more natural approach may be a high priority. The most common natural supplement is liquid Glucosamine. Liquid Glucosamine is designed for joint and cartilage protection and growth.
