Every Pet Should have an Arthritis Checklist

Every Pet Should have an Arthritis Checklist

In order to correctly diagnose your pet, you may want to keep a close eye on his/her symptoms and behavior as well as taking a trip to your vet for x-rays. Some of these warning signs include:

  • Limping
  • Excessive licking around the affected area
  • Lameness
  • Inactivity
  • Instability

Most pets that are 5 years and older may need an arthritis assessment. Early detection of these signs can lead to prevention. Here is a very helpful checklist that every pet owner should review:

  • Observe your petís behavior. Be sure to take notes if your pet seems to have a decrease in his/her normal activity level, or is experiencing any of the above abnormal behaviors.
  • Be sure to keep your pet on a healthy diet, obesity can lead to arthritis even in a younger pet.
  • Know your pets breed. Especially dogs, larger breed dogs are more susceptible to arthritis. Even a younger large breed dog may need supplements early on for joint and cartilage protection and growth.
  • Once you know all there is to know about your pet itís time to take the necessary steps to keep your pet happy and healthy.
  • If you suspect that your pet may have arthritis, get a professional opinion. Take your pet to the vet. X rays and blood tests may help determine the diagnosis.
  • If your pets veterinarian visit determines that your pet is in the early stages of arthritis, itís time to help with the healing! Your pet depends on you to help him get back on his feet!
  • You can gently massage the affected area to help with pain relief. Unless their condition dictates otherwise, exercise is key to keeping your pet healthy.
  • You can start by trying a liquid Glucosamine supplement. The right Glucosamine supplement is determined by its ingredients. All natural is definitely a great way to go.
